The Other Side of Androgyny

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Obvi more female super models than male, I guess the closest I get to a ‘household name’ for male modeling would be Marky Mark. But his modelling peak was ages ago.

The blur and edge of gender in fashion is always hip/happening: see bloggers Bryan Boy or the the real life airbrushed Jay Manuel of ANTM or the other Jay, runway queen… fashion has retained a female dominance, whether viewed as foolish frivolity or emotional expressions of “who we are” and/or the outward “expression of our essence”. Grace Jones was fierce, black, and made the brand of androgyny stick as sexy, interesting… dangerous. When men attempt to blur the lines, the label leans towards “gay” or “metrosexual” or “drag”; the privilege to wear jeans and play ball was actually cool and the nature of being a tom boy is seen has a ‘down-to-earth’ sort of endearing trait amongst girls. For boys to play with Barbies, it is a damning indicator of identity crisis for mostly the father.

Justin Bieber may have the fansite “Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber”, but Andrej Pejic slams the ‘fashion world’ with the newest face of androgyny. He is the gorgeous leggy blonde that would arrest a room of straight men, commanding in his entrance merely with the earnest beauty displayed on that face. Woman will probably request plastic reconstruction in accordance to maps of his bone structure. He looks like the Fountain of Youth.
