Dir. by Sam Mendes
Last night, I went to watch the movie AWAY WE GO with a couple of friends. The new movie features John Krasinski (as an even shaggier bearded Jim-type– charm, boyish grin, and huge crush included) and the lovely Maya Rudolph as a couple who embark on a search for a niche in the world to call their own. They travel to several cities across North America, discovering the horror and comedy of parental paranoia and/or neglect.
The soundtrack is awesome, and then mellow tunes of Alexi Murdoch fill in whatever emotional holes the acting may have left empty (which was rare– Maya Rudolph played her character with beautifully natural talent).
The only fault I would find in the movie would be its overwhelmingly comedic acts (Maggie Gyllenhal’s cameo as the woman who breastfeeds other people’s babies), but that hardly bothers an audience that’s either laughing hysterically (Alison Janney’s rowdy scenes of a borderline mentally unstable wife and mother) or on the verge of tears with adoration. Director Sam Mendes strikes again with the flawless progression of the plot– and I’m already planning to buy the DVD.
For those in my local area– it’s playing at the Guild 45th theatre in Wallingford.
