The External World

Cartoons are most easily dismissed as trivial shenanigans of childhood yore. Animation is more than Pixar movies or Spongebob Squarepants; and just as science fiction yields more than fantasies of the future where people are clothed in spandex, the imagination yields complexities of our most intimate perspectives through these modes of story telling where the rules of gravity are mere suggestions.

David O’Reilly’s “The External World” shows us the dark expanse of our human existence amongst fears, hopes, dreams, and fantasies in the reality we take for granted. The increasing disconnect between who we feel we are versus our physical bodies and surroundings due to technology and where it has taken us is explored in this short film.
