Informational Bit of Information.

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

As ironically useless the title of this post is, it’s quite applicable to the entire experience of the internet, no? The endless tabs and windows I find myself entangled in on a daily basis (I can’t close that one! What if I forget to look at it? Bookmarking is a useless function when I already have millions of sites ready for me to never re-discover! I need to read this here and now– wait what’s this link? Where’s it go to? What’s it about? OPEN IN NEW TAB)–

So the experience of being *given* information is rare and unfortunately unappreciated–i.e. college. And ironically, while we’re being given information already filtered/deemed useful, we’re busy scanning for useless information on Facebook, like if Nancy-So-and-so is cuddling on the couch with her “@Boyfriend the Third”: what a perfect night, hearts X3. Cue copious amounts of sarcastic “likes” and “unlikes” in order to harass her news feed.

I do miss the simple boredom of high school history class– story time by Mr. Sherbrook, the eccentric and surprisingly energetic balding man who loves acting out “the shot heard round the world” (Battle of Lexington and Concord!) as lively as it happened– even as his heavy magnifying-glass glasses slid down his nose and the easy comfort khakis slid up past his ankles and showed off some grey green geezer socks stuck in some well worn gym shoes. Doodling on my notes was never more exciting.

So here’s a bit of a geography/history lesson! I could stand on pedagogy and link this to my previous post about women of color, but that would make me sound like the bitter minority– and I can’t think of anyone who would be more opposed to a bitter, grudge-holding minority than the Great British Empire– on which the sun never sets… until 2012.
