I Remember You Well

at the Chelsea Hotel you were talking so brave and so sweet. — Regina Spektor

The movie was terrible. It was obviously for people who had already experienced the drugs/sex/scandal– the elite few who pretended to revive Baudelarian angst, but were left with a cheap facade and addiction.

For one– none of the interviewees were introduced; it was assumed the viewer knew (or at least, should know) who was speaking, their cultural relevance, their story… I had expected a story to unwind, not an exclusive secret club of doped up wash-outs who existed to live in their past.

My disappointment knew no bounds.

The payoff? Didn’t have to do with the movie, but a preview of a different film.

We Live in Public-- Josh Harriss human experiment

"We Live in Public"-- Josh Harris's human experiment

“We Live in Public” is about the “greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of”: the story of Josh Harris, a dot.com millionaire who, in addition to creating psuedo.com (the first internet television site), conducted studies of the effect of internet technology and live streaming TV to personal identity.

The movie documents part of Harris’s experiment with a life human terrarium (located under New York City) designed to house a hundred or so artists who live under complete surveillance.

While this experiment has more to do with personal identity and behavior, I can’t help but think of Foucault’s famous panopticon concept– of complete visibility, the effect of surveillance (or supposed surveillance) on prisoner behaviors… well, we’ll see. If it doesn’t suck as much as Chelsea on the Rocks.

Happy Tuesday!
