Writing Songs I Can’t Repeat

I fully surrender myself to obsession with Simon and Garfunkel. Yes, everyone likes them. Well: I *LOVE* them.

….So, I don’t get out much. I get it, I’m what they call a loser. I have a 9-5 type of job, and other than class and homework, my extracurricular activities tend to be classified as introverted (i.e. blogging… ). But guys: I have an event to promote. This is big. This means I’m getting out of the apartment/office/bed. We should celebrate together. Rejoice. It might be freakish to see me out of my natural setting. Sort of like, I don’t know, Michael Moore shaking hands with Bush. Maybe not as interesting as that.

MOSTLY DIMES will be playing with WILDCAT CHOIR and SCRIPTURES at the Sunset Tavern over in Ballard– the other B-town– on November 22nd. I generally don’t like introducing/reviewing bands (Oh, I wouldn’t want to *impose* my opinions on others, which is totally a lie because I have a blog. Eh, internal conflict ensues) and I might be slightly biased because my friend’s in it, but c’mon. I’m not that much of a fake. I do like them, my elitist music friend/roommate likes them (see tarazak.blogspot.com), so I’m pretty sure they’re an awesome band. Roots in folksy tunes, and melodic harmonies. Check their album “Double Nickels” out at their website, http://www.mostlydimes.com. They’ve made it available to the general public and the general public’s moms.

The other bands can be found at their respective Myspace Music sites:

Hope to see y’all there!!!

I woke up to music, but as soon as I turned it off I couldn’t turn it back on.

Don’t ask me why I turned it off if I was going to turn it back on again. That’s irrelevant. The fact is that our power is out. This ruins my day plans twofold:

Can’t do laundry + Can’t listen to music = F8cked. No, of course I’m not f*cked, I’m at Cafe Solstice and the ambiance here is welcoming enough for me to actually get comfortable and get some stuff done. So it’s sort of a nice (albeit semi-forced) change. I’ll just have to scrounge for clean underwear. Unfortunately, I’m pretty good at that.

Incidentally, Solstice is playing Feist– I fell asleep to her, I wake up to her…!

If you’re into the local Seattle music scene, I strongly urge young hip whippersnappers to check out the band Mostly Dimes. They’re playing a few concerts soon this season, and you can download their first and current album “Double Nickels” at http://www.mostlydimes.com. Pretty mellow, well made indie music– a wistful-sounding lead vocal– quite perfect for our damp, somber Seattle weather…

And speaking of the Seattle music scene, does anyone recommend any other cool local band? I’ve seen the usual cliched stereotypes tryin’ to make it big, but anyone know of a cool, original band that really rocks out? (i.e. Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, before their indie-mainstream-success)

I also watched “Where the Wild Things Are” last night; it was surprisingly poignant/sad/depressing. I like it though: it poses a lot of serious questions and issues of growing up– being mortal– holding on to family– but it was also fun. I mean, it’s hard enough to make a movie from a children’s book that shows some kid romping around and having a wild time. Spike Jonze does awesome things with action, and I definitely appreciate them.

Gotta go do some art. Or try to. I’ll leave you with a very geeky picture of real-time Merry and Pippin hanging out as BFF. BECAUSE IT MAKES ME HAVE HOPE.

I know I’m a little weird.
