So I’ve been on HULU for the usual sit-com-edy stuff, a Family Guy episode or two, and maybe a guilty 100th play of any Arrested Development episode, but HULU is so much more than catching up to Dancing With the Stars or the latest SNL skit. Documentaries being a kind of “acquired taste” (please say that with your nose in the air and a dry riesling swishing through your teeth), not many realize (haha, or care) the density of knowledge and non-fiction media that HULU provides.

It took me awhile to get into the ART21 series by PBS that is linked through HULU, but the interviews are in-depth and fascinating: they ask artists where their motivations behind certain pieces or shows begin manifesting themselves, whether from their deep personal past or political issues on the public agenda today. Shows have themes like “emotion”, “transformation”, “systems”, “avatars”, and more. Success stories are romantic– those stubborn, bullheaded stalwart expressions that create an extraordinary perception of life are more than ever apparent in the conviction and perseverance of artists in pursing their passions.

HULU also links us to various artistic short interviews or films hosted on VBS.TV. Contemporary artists like Dan Colen are interviewed on ART TALK to facilitate discussion about modern day inspirations and creative ideas.

Through VBS.TV, I also connected with The Creator’s Project at thecreatorsproject.com. This site features a smörgåsbord (I like to use that word as often as possible) of video profiles on those accomplished in music, design, art, gaming, and fashion– i.e. creative media. Some ‘creators’ featured include: Diplo, Mark Ronson, Cassette Playa, Danny Perez, and Spike Jonz. Not only do they introduce you to the ‘creator’, but link you to other productions/collaborations that they’ve contributed to.

Whew! So thank the spirits that be for Hulu. And it also doesn’t hurt to check out their “Classics” channel, where my new favorite show to catch up on is The Addams Family and The Hitchcock Hour.

So for my digital humanities course, I’m working on a quarter project inspired by Huxley’s Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell.

What I want to emerge from the project:

“De-fetishization” of drug use/abuse through contextualizing the beginnings of drug culture in the 50′s and 60′s within political histoirical and socio-historical key political events and culture tropes.

What the project is:

Mapping the effect of mescaline and heroin on the brain and physiological effects beginning in the brain, I would like to illustrate these effects with the literary experiences of William S. Burroughs and Aldous Huxley in their books Naked Lunch and Doors of Perception/ Heaven and Hell

A time line of historical events may be included.
