Lights, Camera, Independence
Indie film night with some girlfriends.
I’ve never been, so I’m anticipating serious people. Serious film buffs. Not to insult my friend, who is a serious film bluff and was the one that invited me… she is unequivocally awesome.
But to play along with stereotypes, I’m thinking the social artists of Seattle. The hipsters of hipsters across all ages. The ones that actually do attend the Seattle Indie Film Festival (and not just receive dozens of their emails to delete them, which I am guilty of doing). I’m not really in the scene– and I’m sure they’re just normal people that keep up with indie films– but it’s always fun scoping out the audiences at the movies.
The first movie, “Tokyo Sonata”, is about a family that falls to pieces after the father is layed off at a prominent company. Its won a fair share of awards (see: olive branches with “winner of ____ film festival”), and of course is filmed in Japanese. Obviously, tremendous asian/patriarch culture factor.

A father's faith in God is put to the test when he falls for another woman.
The second movie has considerably more awards, and is called “Silent Light”, or Stellet Licht, and is filmed in German. Controversial issue of faith as a pastor falls in love with another woman is tantalizing, but there’s always that problem of after-movie despair/depression. That happens more often with independent films.
Understandably– which studio risks actually affecting an audience’s perspective on life’s questions?
Anyway, I’ll report back tomorrow about these flicks… !
